pretzel v0.78 (alpha)

12/13/2005 11:58:42 PM | Posted by: Threshold | 1 comment
->Website
pretzel v0.78] alpha version has just been released.

(From Mabeac Interactive)

Features:
*Space fighting ACTION! ;)
*20 ship types
*20 weapon types
*Firing up to 4 weapon groups
*Auto-aiming/heat-seeking weapons
*Real-time minimap
*Zooming

Ships don't have any AI yet so they're easy to kill allowing for tons of explosions!

It's nothing ultra impressive, but it has potential. We're experiencing some compatability issues, so if it doesn't work on your computer, let me know your system specs.

As of now, the game is fully customizable since all data are in scripts (any good programmer should be able to explore the app directory and find this stuff). To change what ships you want to fight, look in maps.inf. Help is on the website.

Any feedback is highly appreciated!

New Alpha 7 Site

3/6/2005 9:51:03 PM | Posted by: Peter | 6 comments
There is a new website for Alpha 7 up at http://www.talosstudios.com

As some of you might know, the project was recently restarted after a long hiatus.

The site is a departure from your typical games site though. I'll be posting new screenshots and demos as they come along but mostly its an online development log.

Its basically just an online log for me to talk about what goes into the game, from new pieces of code to new art, features etc. If there are any interesting pieces of code I'll make sure to put them up too, maybe even in mini-tutorial form.

Anyways, check it out if you feel like it and let me know what you think.

Twisted System

2/9/2005 9:37:44 AM | Posted by: terrorbite | 1 comment
If anyone has played Fuzion Frenzy on the Xbox, you'll know its a party game composed of lots of smaller games, similar in a way to Mario Party.

My favourite of which is called Twisted System. The game is being developed in Visual Basic 6, and uses DirectX 8.

Current features include:

Fullscreen anti aliasing
Specular highlighting
Bilinear texture filtering
Alpha blending
Directional lighting
Texturing

I can get at least 75fps (max due to v sync) using 1280x1024 res, with 32 bit colour, and 6x AA, although it can get a bit choppy with lots of obstacles. I have an Athlon XP 2500 and a Radeon 9600 card.
I will be including lots of graphics options, so it should work fine on almost any PC.

As you can see from the screenshot, its currently lacking final textures, and the obstacles aren't yet finished, nor is the lighting. Collision detection still needs major work.

Although the tower itself is almost identical to that in the Xbox version, nothing has been lifted from that game at all. All textures, models and sound will be/are my own work when completed.

VideogameLayer3d (VGL3d) Alpha Demo

Here's a demo of the VGL3d project I'm working on. It's not much yet, but you get to see the engine in action.

I suggest Win2k, 1GHz CPU, GeForce and DX8.1 to run. I would appreciate framerate/cycle rate reports (using the default settings) on other system configurations so I can gauge the performance (and compatibility as well).

Alpha 7 Back Online

8/18/2004 6:15:47 PM | Posted by: Peter | 12 comments
->Website
We're baaaaack =) After a long hiatus, Alpha 7 is back in development! Right now we are working on the game's missions with a limited release (details to come) in September.

Space action amped - Alpha 7 features intense space action. As a fighter pilot in the Terran Space Force you are part of humanity's last hope against the hordes of Species 159 bugs.

Besides action, Alpha 7 has you fighting amongst allies in pitched battles as friends call in for help, the enemy keeps coming, and objectives change.

For example, in one mission you are part of a taskforce assigned to launch a counterattack against Boundary Line Omega, the last line of defence between the 159 and the supercarrier TSF Independence. If the Independence and its battle group falls, the 159 will be free to pour out into the rest of the galaxy from the Hyperion Nebula. Nothing will stand between them and Earth.

The Boundary Line was breached in the last mission, and now it is the TSF's task to retake it. You will be fighting amongst heavily armoured TSF Gunships and larger capitol ships (the Gunboats, which are packed to the brim with deadly turrets). Hundreds of bugs stand between you and your objective. They will swarm and crash into your small squadron again and again as you attempt to retake Omega (Screenshot 1)

Another mission will see you defending a disabled TSF cruiser, the Ordonnes. As an example of the complexity of later missions, you would have to defend the Ordonnes from attack for a few minutes while troop transports get into position to evac the crew. Once the crew is in, you would have to fight a rearguard action to save the transports from the pursuing 159.

Screenshot 3 features the TSF Independence itself, a massive capitol ship that spans several screens in length.

Star Cars - Second Alpha Demo

6/14/2004 5:51:51 PM | Posted by: Peachysoft | Post a comment
->Website
Peachysoft has just released the second demo of their up and coming shareware game StarCars. The game is modeled on an old time favoriate called SkyRoads by BlueMoon interactive. Peachysofts version however, is not just a remake but a moddifed new game.

Added to this version:
  • Moving Platforms
  • Stars to collect
  • Ramps
  • SFX
  • Bounce Pads
  • Turbo Pads

If anyone is willing to test out this alpha version. Please send me an email telling me what you think about the game and you will recieve a free version of the full game when it comes out. (Please include system specs) But you have to send me an email, so I can put you on my list.

There isn't too much to do before the game goes into Beta. A pregame GUI and a fastest times table is about all there is - as well as creating many many more levels of course.

Note: The SFX are a bit grimey - They will be replaced in the beta, they are just fillers for the moment.

So please download and enjoy. Oh - one final note: It is important (because of the way I have programed the game) that you get a constant 25fps - if you get under this amount please, I will need to know what your system specs are.

Programmed in Visual Basic 6.0 with DirectX 8.0

Finally the second alpha version is ready for download and... play. It has many more features and levels, and a mission (help Dragg to return home) with 2 solutions.
Just try it out and... send me feedback. What sould I make it better and more fun with?
And of course, I could use a little help with the graphics. Alone is going VERY slow.

Fetish Fighters Revealed Alpha Test

11/6/2003 6:30:09 PM | Posted by: JerryF | Post a comment
->Website
I've just posted an alpha version (very incomplete) of my new fighting game, Fetish Fighters Revealed. I really want to spend some time trying to polish this one, so I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Its just zipped up for now (no installer), so you'll need the VB6 runtime already installed, and IE 6 (for the XML DOM support.)

Here's a short list of some of the things I've put into it so far:

  • Characters have been shrunk to about 80 % of there original size.
  • Power ups have been added!! You can now pickup a health power up, or pickup a strength power up
  • The combo system has been rewritten to allow you to combine your own series of moves.
  • Each character now has twice as many basic offensive moves as before
  • Improved visuals with each character now being anti-aliased.
  • More detailed stages
  • Improved animated sequences
  • Completely rewrote the collision detection system.

New Isometric MMORPG

This is an EARLY alpha but demonstrates it's capabilities. It's design to be extremely efficient in using system resources. It will be fully customizable but will use Dungeons & Dragons v3.5 rules for combat. This Lean and Mean concept is what I believe makes this one different from similar projects. After minimal combat routines are finished the source will be available. Right now, though, only the executables are available at :

Game Thoughts releases WordWars

Game Thoughts has released WordWars! WordWars is a game written in VB with transparency, alpha blending, skinning, and more. Play a scrabble-like game and use over 50 special words to try to kill your opponent. They're all secret of course, so you'll have to find them during the course of place.

Or, log into the Brainstorm server to play against other people online for free. The Brainstorm server was written with C/C++, showing that a networked TCP/IP game with a VB client is not only possible, but feasible. Come check out WordWars, and download the free demo today.
