As far as I see it there are 3 main types of 2D engine:
1. Isometric
2. top down
3. Sideways scrolling
there are variations upon them, but those are the basic 3 types...
Now I have to say that in almost all cases Isometric will look more real, as it is very close to a 3D perspective. Maybe not the best graphics in detail, but if you hand it to some person from the hills he/she will recognise what it is...
btw, XCOM: Apocalypse, a 2D isometric game of 256 colours and low-dos resolution looks pretty damn realistic actually; much more so that something like Sonic the Hedgehog...
