There is a really great tutorial at Unlimited Realities showcasing all the steps, from beginning concept to final demo, of a 3D animated bug. The tutorial is in DirectX8, but many of the concepts can be applied to DirectX7 or DirectX9 applications. Source code is included in the demo program.
