DarkBasic Peter (3 replies, 0 views) (2000-May-11) I find DarkBasic a little disturbing. Especially this quote from their site:
>You need never know how the computer software actually works
Doesn't that defeat the whole point of programming ;) I don't think DB will ever become a proffesional programming language however. The incredibly high level of the language has to be slow. I'd like to see some intensive db games running on a P-166. The lack of OOP has to be bad too :( They didn't say but how full featured is darkBasic in respect to stuff like file I/O, arrays, pointers, string manipulation?
But if it gets a lot of people into programming, well, more power to them! I bet a lot of people will work with darkBasic for a while and then switch to C++ or VB once they want to do something more sophisticated or non game related (gasp!).
One thing that kind of struck me as ironic is how the website touts that any beginner can create a proffesional quality 3D game in a few days with their free language but they didn't mention you have to buy an actual 3D modeller to go with it that can run into thousands of dollars. Plus that to make decent 3D models you need a lot of artistic talent and a lot of time too.
One good use for darkBasic for non-beginners though is to quickly knock up a prototype of a game in a few hours. That seems very useful.
