I can't help you with X files (would never touch one of those myself) but I strongly recommend you to check out the Ascii Scene Export (*.ASE) format in 3D studio max, it is very easy to load from VB, and can export most (if not all) features of a max scene, even animations. I use this format for the engine I'm currently writing, and I have no problems with textures or anything else.
