It won't happen... Rag on a Stick (4 replies, 0 views) (2000-Jul-15)

OK, there are supposed to be some good points so hopefully the public will embrace the new technology ("Oh YAY, I get to download MS Word again today so I can test out a font") such as the ability to access your documents from any computer anywhere ("Phew, now when I'm at a friends house we can look at my latest spreadsheet"). But the main problem with all this is that no one will like it. Every server has downtime, especially one running Windows, so if the ASP goes down for 5 minutes, everyone gets angry. Everyone. I just pinged my ISP and there was about a 110 ms gap between me sending, them sending and me receiving. Now that is to the people I have a direct connection to. www.microsoft.com.au - 554 milliseconds. And that's just to send 32 bytes of data. 554 milliseconds. Sure I'm only on 56.6kb modem because cable is still a bit too expensive, so is sattelite and DSN and ADSN aren't available. The other reason for not getting the higher speed internet connection is because I don't need it, and same with most people. We don't need to have an internet connection that can download a 3 minute song in 5 seconds. So why should we get a faster internet connection just to run a program which we have on our harddrive? If the public don't buy it, what can they do? "We're not going to make any more programs until you use this." Like that'd work, there are other OSs and software makers. People would just switch. And so would Microsoft. Is that rant long enough? SlayFest: Fixing up levels, making new levels, playtesting. Monday release.
