What if you re-do the site, get a new domain, and just make it an Indy Gamer news site, oriented for all languages. When people post news, they can then have a drop-down box of which language it is in. The news page on the front will show all news, then you can filter out to show just certain categories.
The thing about VBgamer, as it is now, is that many people know about it, but also look at it as dead. Many dont come back to revisit it unless after a long visit, since it's nothing new to them. Recreating the site will make it a new place, so people would come check it out. If I were to see a link to "VBgamer" next to a site which I have never heard of, I'd click the one I dont know first.
The idea of bringing all languages together would add much more diversity, and attract a larger crowd. Although VB is the leader in small, indy games, having every other language would attract a crowd much larger, and get a lot more news.
I know there is many Game News sites, but those are mostly aimed towards the big market games. I think the idea of an Indy Gamer site would be fantastic! If you want to do this, I'd probably try to help out where I can - I tried to help out with this site a long time ago with the Engine section, but kicked off worse then anything.

Sounds great. I don't know if it will breath any life into this site, but every little bit helps. |

The problem with alot of the other indie sites, is they don't allow for promotion(even freeware). I learned this the hard way. So the idea to expand the languages on this site would be a good one. Especially if you keep allowing for news to be posted, alot of sites are just forums with too many rules. Just my opinion though.

Include C#!!! :D
*points to his post*
I have been extremely too busy to post on most the forums I frequently visit. Awhile ago I actually used VoodooVB for some ideas for my new 2D game engine... lol that was a throwback to the good old days! |

Ok, 20 questions! :P
1. What purpose does this site serve for you?
2. Personally I see this site as a combination of gamedev, gamespot, and indiegamer. This website is oriented towards developers like gamedev, but it has more of a focus on the games while gamedev's focus is different. Gamedev focuses on industry and comercial news, it doesn't promote the games that the developers create. This website is like gamespot in that it promotes games, however gamespot is consumer oriented for professional game developers while vbgamer is for independent devlopers. On that note, vbgamer and indiegamer are similar in that we focus on independent/hobby developers. Indiegamer is only a forum and nothing else. Its doesn't highlight the end result of getting programmers together, which are the games. So the question is are the features that vbgamer has a bad combination that simply don't work?
Ok, so that's only 2 questions, but I'd like some detailed answers insead of one line replies :P Thanks! |

Those other sites are heavily marketed. Plus they have ad revenue as well. Perhaps a more typical business model for this site may be needed? Instead of relying on word of mouth to promote the site, why not spend some money on yahoo/google ads, promote contests with sponsorship, etc, etc. Place some google ads on the site and in the forum to get some money to fund the site. Charge developers to place ads on the site. I'd be interested in advertising on this site for example. ;) Marketing is everything these days, regardless how good or bad the content is. :( |

Hi Eric,
Mainly I use this site for the forums. If I get the chance to return to an active project; I'll post it. But it will probably be in REALbasic, or perhaps even Blitz BASIC, not VB.
I suggested earlier that VBGamer sponsor a group project, like a multi-player online roleplaying game, or something like it. Perhaps it would add a new diminsion to the site which might attract members. I think that if the site continually had new content (like the project would have updates), that might keep people coming back.
Just a thought.

I just use VBgamer for what it was made for - seeing the news on VB games. Though, since Visual Basic is quite dead as far as game releases go, dont need to check the site more then once every two months since I still wont miss anything. |

Game development in VB may be dwindling, but game dev in BASIC is quite active; almost all the different BASIC dialects out there are designed specifically for game dev (like Dark BASIC or Blitz BASIC) or have features which allow for game development (Like REALbasic and Liberty BASIC). Those dialects each have their own loyal following.
But that means those dialects also have their own game development forums, so opening up the site as a generic "BASIC Gamer" site may or may not be effective. VBGamer either needs some form of promotion or activity (like a group project).
