While interesting, it doesn't represent the typical "casual gamer" by a long shot imho and probably only represents their user base. The "network speed" and "video card" results are dead give aways this is not your typical casual game downloader. ;)

I'm just thinking if anyone is making a game and want's a general idea of what kind of hardware is common out there this may help them out. ... I have gave it a little thought and I have to disagree with you dxgame. I tend to think that it is representitive of a casual gamers computer. My resoning is this. Even though steam is used to play half-life 2 and such it is also used to play much older games like Half-life 1, and counter strike etc. All the valve games from the half-life franchise were ported over to the new steam platform, and as such the people who used to own the original half-life games and mods would now be running them under steam.
But I also have to agree that the network speed is not acurate. It simply represents what setting you have specified under the steam settings. And does not represent what actual internet connection people have.
I think the video card listings are fairly acurate only because of the number of people who have submitted there specs. The "ATI Radeon 9800 Series" and "ATI Radeon 9600 Series" are listed as the most popular but if you look at all the other video cards that are listed (theres like 75 or more other cards listed) the total combined value of those other cards is equal to that or greater then that of the 9800 and 9600 ati cards.

| I guess it all depends on someone's personal definition of "casual gamer". ;) Usually from an "indy developer" perspective, a casual gamer is someone playing "BeJeweled", "Ricochet", "Marbles", etc, and their many variations. But still an interesting link worth checking out, thanks for posting it (and reminding me about it). :) |

I have to agree with dxgame on this one. I don't think these are "casual" gamers. People that play counter strike and half life are more "hard core" than they are "casual." A casual gamer is someone that plays simple games, like flash games, solitare, puzzle games, etc. to pass time and possibly avoid having to work. The simple fact that nVidia and ATI top the charts is evidence that these people do not own average computers. Many people don't realize this but the largest video card manufacturer is Intel. Most computers have an integrated intel video card, and since this is not represented on this survey, these computers either have upgraded video cards or are custom built. Either way, that's not your "casual" gamer. People that play counter strike on a regular basis are not the same type of people that play solitare on a regular basis.  |

I see it as if your game can run on a 1ghz cpu, geforce 2, and 256mb of ram it should be fine for the "casual" gamer.
