Hi peoples... been a while, how's everyone doing, and what's everyone doing? I have abandoned VB game making, still use VB to write apps and tools, but no more games. I got a job at AMD, and work as a Cluster Admin, so time is rare lately. Oh ya, if you don't remember who I am, Im the guy who wrote RoX back in the day, surprisingly people still play it :), those were the good days, growing up is tough. I'll try to keep in touch though, it was really alot of fun learning with you people, and having a tight community like before.

Nice to hear from you!
You may find it fascinating that RoX is not only still played but still sets a standard for VB games. Few games (if any) have surpassed yours in quality even up to this point.
I hope the job goes well for you.

No kidding. I only recently discovered RoX, so I haven't finished it, but I'm very impressed with what I've seen so far. Rarely to you ever see a clever, yet polished VB game like RoX. It's an inspiration. |

Thanks for the compliments. RoX isn't an original idea, but it was alot of fun making it. VB was very easy to learn, and it was fun writing my first games with it. Actually, first games I've made were in QBasic, and they were some crappy games :>
Anyways, what's everybody working lately? Any new games in the making? Who's juicing VB these days? ;>

My brother and I are making a game similar to the old DOS game, NiteRaid for our younger siblings. I do the code, my brother does everything else. Unfortunately for me, the whole point of the game is feature creep, so it's not going to be done anytime soon. |

RoX is still the game I consider as best VB game, ever made. IT was simply finished, and just completely finished, like a commercial game.
Btw, cool you got an interesting job :). But are you planning to make a new game eventually?

Hey Almar, we go way back man :)
Thanks for the kind words as well, and yes, I am working on some gaming stuff :D, actually RoX is being remade and remolded to fit the casual gaming scene, and will be sold online as shareware. Also, it will most likely be published by PopCap games, I am using their framework to develop. The framework is pure C++ and Win32, but is very flexible. It uses 3D acceleration for rendering (DX7), and can fallback to pure software if no 3D card is present (DX6), and the software has same features as hardware, sprite rotations, alpha blending, scaling, coloring.
I was approached by small publishers like Alawar for the VB RoX, but I didn't think it was polished enough to be successful, and I also thought that the code base wasn't flexible enough and too buggy. So I turned everyone down, and keep RoX free :)
Recently though, some people still suggested trying to sell RoX, so I thought why not remake a new version, with more polish and stability, so that's where I'm at now. After talking to PopCap games and others, I figured that the game has to be casualized to survive in that market. So some cuts had to be made, like the play area isn't scrollable anymore, one static screen, and mouse controls are introduced as well. The single screen levels have an interesting advantage though, anything that falls off the screen, comes back from the top, like pac-man style, same with sides, if you run left, you come out from the right. Another advantage with single screen levels is that artistically it's more appealing and everyone always sees the whole picture.
Anyways, making the game more casual got people interested, and I might make a few bucks on a side. Won't take long to develop, already half way done. I still have my cousin to help with music and tools, so I think it's going to be just fine.
Other than that, work is difficult, so I have to learn a lot there, and girlfriend tries to take up some time, but I wiggle around somehow :).
Anyways, what's up with you?
