I am seeking 2 additional people to act as judges for the contest I am setting up on my web site at http://contest.createdbyx.com/. Judging will consist of a rating the game with a 5 point rating system based on the fallowing aspects of the game ...

  • Graphics

  • Game play

  • Sound and music (this is not a requirment/ see below)

Each category will be rated 1 out of 5. Then each category will be averaged and that average will become the games score.
For example if a game was given a score of ...

Graphics = 3
Game Play = 5
Audio = 2

... the games score would be 3.33 ((Graphics + Game Play + Audio) / 3)

Additionally each judges score of that game will be averaged to produce a final score for the game

Judge 1 = 3.33
Judge 2 = 4
Judge 3 = 2.5

The games final score would be 3.27 ((Judge 1 + Judge 2 + Judge 3) / 3)

Sound and Music will not be a requirement of the game as it can add much more complexity to the code. The contest is meant to reach out to as many vb programmers as possible both begginer and advanced.

A start end end date must also be decided upon for the contest.

Hi Eric,

I would be willing to act as judge for your contest. You can find more information about me at www.accusoft.com. I am currently writing a book about VB programming and ran across your site in doing research (aka looking for useful code).

Best regards,

Scott

Hi Scott,
Unless CBX's name is Eric too, I don't have anything to do with this contest.

I think I'd like to try my hand at creating a simple game, so I don't want to be a judge.

If the game has sound then the sound should be judged, but if the game has no sound the default score would be 2.5.

So... if you have no sound you get 2.5.. if your sound sucks you could potentially get a lower score than having none at all... not sure if that is fair or not imo. Unless you said that if you have sound, the lowest you could get is 3, then that would be fair.

Just my $.02... I think I'll try my hand at a simple game too.

What's unfair about it? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's turned the sound off for a game because it was so bad as to be detrimental.

IMO, it's pretty weird for a game to have a score for sound of 2.5 when there's no sound. It's either you require sound(so no sound means 0 score), or you don't (which means sound is not factored in the final score). No middle ground.

Anyway, for a game that does not even allow simple scrolling, why does the graphics have the same weight as gameplay? Also, how about games like Galaxian? Technically, there's really no scrolling going on (tilemap scrolling, that is), but one can argue that the stars moving in the background IS scrolling.

Space shooters like gradius and Galaxian are fine and are allowed.

Again, Sound and Music will not be a requirement of the game as it can add much more complexity to the code. The contest is meant to reach out to as many vb programmers as possible both begginer and advanced.

I think the default score of 2.5 for a game that has no sound will stand as is. But if the judge(s) wish to lower or increase the score that is up to them.

As far a the length of the contest goes I think 2 months time span would be enough time to create a simple game, if a person puts in about 5 days a week for an hour or so at a time that ammounts to about 40 Hours of work over the cource of 2 months.

Other than the minor details, I support your initiative. Interest in VB gaming need to be perked up a bit. There's barely news lately!

Still, it's pretty hard to make an "excellent" "simple" game (one that can be understood by beginners, yet technically outstanding). Maybe the next Tetris, perhaps? Perhaps some NES remakes...

PS I don't have any problems to open-source my main code. However, I do use some external DLL (ie VGL). Is that allowed?

cbx ...

Nice initiative -- I applaud.

However, I'm also a bit leary to how you plan on judging sound in the final score. Perhaps you could just go with "gameplay" and "artistic quality", which could put graphics, sound, backstory/theme, etc., all in one bucket. That only gives you 2 rating areas, which might be a bit light to separate out the scoring between the games. So, perhaps an "extras" or "originality" score added in.

Otherwise, the concept for the contest is quite good, and something I might consider submitting an entry for. Do you have a planned end-date for the contest?

The contest has not officially started yet but will, run for about 2 to 3 months. At 2 months, if you spend 1 hour a day, 5 days a week thats about 40 hours of work. 3 months works out to about 60 hours of work.
