what is the difference between tile mapped scrolling screen and bitmap scrolling screen?

In a tile mapped scrolling screen the background is made up of lots of small tiles. with a bitmap scrolling screen the background is one large bitmap (that typically wraps around so you can make it repeat seamlessly) and sometimes there are multiple large bitmaps for the level (but all in a line rather than tiled)
