I am interested in developing an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online RPG) and I think it would make a great community project. Seeing as I am no VB Guru, I am only just starting out, it would be very beneficial to my learning of the language.

Tell me what you think of a community project like this?

Without being the messenger of doom ...

A lot of community projects have come and gone. Not many actually produce a finished product. This is not a VB-specific problem, but common among all indy game developers it seems. I don't know of any actual finished games by a community VB project at all -- the closest things have been 2- or 3-person efforts of people who knew each other pretty well beforehand.

However, there is one project that seems to retain its momentum ... originally called The Gather Project, now it's known as The Lost Alliance (http://www.thelostalliance.com) -- and it's an RPG project too. Perhaps they still need some talent to add to the team ...
