Well, the storyline bin was really just a joke. Reusing other peoples storylines probably wouldn't work out very well.
As for the content in the Sound Effects and Music bins - I wouldn't worry about that. Most Visual Basic games are freeware, and most include royalty free sound effects and music as well. Just like the Art-bin there is plenty of free multi-media resources that can be shared. I know I have many megabytes worth of various sound effects and a hole bunch of high quality old-school music tracks. And these are all royalty-free, mind you! I believe that it will turn out to be a good idea to being able to share more game content and resources than code snipnets and art.
*Yawn* I'm off to bed! |

A pity about the christmas contest. I heard there was cheating going on, but I hadn't realized it got so bad. You'd think a contest with no prize wouldn't be such a big deal to people. |

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 4:19:46 PM I don't plan on having anything to do with any Christmas contest this year. If people still want it to happen, then someone else will have to organize and moderate it. There are 2 reasons. I don't have the time and given the enormous amount of cheating last year, I don't want to be associated with it. That's all I will say on that. I do have the original pages from the 2000 and 2001 contest, so if someone wants them I'll be happy to hand them over.
A search feature for the links page is a good idea. Should it search by description, website name, both, or url?

I agree. The whip might be a good idea. I have some half finished articles that I've written, but lately most of my time is spent working on improving the website instead of adding content.

Some people might not be so open about giving up their copyright to anything they write or create. If you post an article here at VBgamer, you still retain the copyright to it. If you post something at gpwiki, you loose any rights you had with what you've posted. A company like gamedev.net or Sams Publishing could download the entire website and then publish and sell a book based off the websites content and there would be nothing you could do to stop them. You wouldn't even get any royalties or anything. All they would have to do is have some fine print somewhere that mentions the website. Your name wouldn't even need to be listed or associated with any content. Name recognition is very important, especially in this industry. Being associated with something in a wiki doesn't have the same effect as being able to say "I wrote these articles and they are published on these websites."

Yes, that's the purpose of the code bin. The Sound, Music, and Storyline bins are good ideas, but we might have a difficult time trying to get people to submit content. |

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 3:52:33 PM If it's as easy as you say, I probably better learn to do it myself. I shouldn't get in the habit of having other people do all my work for me. |

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 3:30:04 PM It is actually very simple once you've tried it out. There is only a handfull of tags, and they're all accessable from the edit-menu - just like bold, italic, underline etc. is when making a post on VBGamer. If you want me to, I'll be happy to add the tutorial to GPwiki once you've uploaded it to VBGamer... |

Yeah, but submission to VBGamer is simpler in my opinion. For the tutorial I'm working on, I plan on submitting it to VBGamer first, and only submitting it to GPWiki later if I have time. All that stuff with licences and having to learn special tags, etc., to me just seems like a lot of bother for something that could really be very simple. |

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 10:02:45 AM I can't really come up with any features that would work really well with the new site, other than the ones already planned.
However, the developers wanted/developers seeking projects/beta-testing feature that you mentioned in the forum (http://www.vbgamer.com/msgboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=205) sounds like a really good idea.
Articles and tutorials would also be nice, but that's what http://GPwiki.org is for right? In my oppinion it's better to gather all tutorials and such on a few sites than having them spread over too many sites.
Prehaps a code snippet bin to small usefull pieces of code, if that's not the purpose of "Code Bin". Maybe also a "Sound Bin" and a "Music Bin"? How about a "Storyline Bin"? J/K |

Posted - Sep 14 2004 : 07:22:04 AM I would like to have an official page for the Christmas contest. It doesn't necessarily have to be permanent, but I would like something more friendly than the confusing table we had last year.
I would also appreciate a search function for the links page. Some people might argue that it's not necessary, but I found myself hunting around for one on more than one occasion.
But really that's just little stuff. All this site needs to really rock is a lot more activity from it's members. Unless you're going to go door to door with a whip, there probably isn't a whole lot you can do about it that you're not already doing.
