The 3D vs 2D argument Peter (5 replies, 0 views) (2000-Jun-7)

I really don't get where this debate come from all of a sudden. I find it really pointless. Like, for the 2D only camp, saying that there was some "Golden Age of Videogames" time period in the lates 80s, early 90s is pure nostagalia talking. There were some very good games back then, and there was more than a lot of complete stinkers, much the same as now. There were some really crappy things going on back then, like the "hunt the verb" thing in the old Infocom adventure games. Also, how can you say 3D is "crap" because it isn't photorealistic when there aren't really that many photorealistic 2D games? Like the FF6 example, in that game the characters hand is just a bunch of big pixels! In FF7 it is a blobbish polygon! What the hell is that? My point is that how can you say 3D is the worst because it makes graphics look bad when you are glorifying 2D games that look a lot worse?! Just because a game is 3D, does not mean the gameplay immeadiatly becomes second tier. Think of all the incredibly awesome 3D games released with absolute kick ass gameplay. Half-Life and Myth II come to mind immeadiatly. A lot of the time, 3D allows for more immersivness, and sometimes a relief on the art load, as you don't have to draw the sprite moving in like 16 or more directions. Its sometimes more fluid and more dynamic. Many 3D games look very good, like Half-Life, Myth II (an incredibly awesome game!) and the upcoming Warcraft III. Take Warcraft III, it actually looks like the older isometric games like Starcraft, but its 3D, and the 3D allows for some very nice effects. Diablo II is 5D. Baldur's Gate II is 5D. Whether you choose 2D or 3D depends on the game you are creating and your vision for it. DDCK is 2D because that works very well with it. Our next game will probably be 5D or completely 3D (if I can figure it out!) Anyways, my point is that both perspectives are about equal, with each having its own advantages and disadvantages. Also, as an afterpoint, 2D is slowly merging with 3D, with DirectX 8 eliminating Directdraw I believe. To get 2D you'll have to use the 5D method. Adam: Why did you moderate Alex's posts? What was in them that demanded banning? I think that's a bit heavy handed. As long as its on-topic, even if its a flame it should be allowed. Please unban it, I want to read what he said. Peter
