Well, DX7 needs directdraw to enumerate the display devices. That has been incorporated into the new interfaces. From dx7 back to dx3 you needed to use DD to at least grab the device and make the surfaces for display. DX8 looks great so far. Now you don't even need to make a primary or backbuffer surface to get it going. That removes a lot of overhead and tracking in your programs.
