Retained mode is probably used mainly for 3d graphics programs and CAD and other stuff that needs 3d models but isn't performance-critical. It's easy to use, so you can build a 3d app without having to write your own engine, but to get real control, you gotta go with IM. Besides, isn't it way more fun getting right into the gory details and doing everything yourself? :-)
