One thing that comes to mind for me immediately is the fact that some (or all, I'm not sure) 3d cards split up the video memory for different purposes (ie: storing texture data, etc). So, maybe you don't have access to all 8 mb for making a primary surface? I'm just making an educated guess here, don't trust me :) David
