as long as "vbruntime" dll's are required to use vb apps, it's not going to increase in speed too much. I also think that it's starting to look similar to C++ "VB .Net" .... they (Microsoft) are trying to push Visual Studio to intergrate with the web/internet while maintaining the good old .exe apps.
