RE: Reasons... Jay Wheeler (0 replies, 0 views) (2000-Aug-14) Game programming is driven by the fun you have while doing it. Everything everybody has said is true, but I'll be the first to admit that the prospect of making a whole lot of money doesn't hurt! It's a challenge to yourself -- "Am I capable of making a program that other people will enjoy and reward me for?"
Anybody else agree, or is this more of a laid-back, "do-it-for-the-good-of-humanity-don't-send-a-dime" crowd? (Not that there's -ANYTHING- wrong with that!!)
It's also exciting that VB programs are finally coming to the point of being able to directly compete with C++ games, (even though carefully designed puzzle and other games have been capable of that for quite some time). You could probably come close to making a Quake game if you had the energy! So I'd bet that VB will finally start to spawn millionaire teams like Blizzard and iD and whatnot, especially because the development cycle and debugging are "oso" much easier.
