I just love the feeling you get, when you run the game and for the first time and you can actually do something that resembles playing the game. That is the moment when you just can't stop. Ahhh. But I actually prefer to say, I wonder if I can make the players feel like this ...... and then I go about making a game to see how much control I can get over the gamers, whether it be by making an addictive game that they can't stop playing, or by making a scary scene that freaks people out every time they play it. I think that is what game making is all about, the player thinks they are in control of the game, but rather the game is pushing them to new extremes and forcing them to think different (I'm sounding like a Mac PR dude =) Take a game like Rainbow Six, the game makes you feel as important as one of the anti terrorist people, yet it stresses the fragility of life as one shot will probably kill you or incapacitate you, unless you are extremely lucky. Every move you made, you felt scared that there would be a terrorist around the corner with gun ready. And if you did die, it almost hurt, the sharp noise and then the radio call of your squad members as they requested backup. Now I don't think Rainbow 6 was a particulary outstanding game (I liked it, don't get me wrong) but there were still some problems with it, but still people didn't mind, just because of the games character. But just take a game like SlayFest (yeah, I can bag out my own games, only because it was sort of an accident =) it didn't really try to manipulate the player, it just let them do as they please. If it had of been full of problems like Rainbow 6, it would have been terrible. But in the end Rainbow 6 was more fun. Is this just because of design, or did the makers have an idea behind the game? btw Does anyone know where Adam is? I sent him an article the other day and haven't got a response. Adam? You there? (I suppose you may be busy with Enigma, so I'll forgive you just this once) If anyone wants a VB Pathfinding Tutorial to put on a web site, just ask, it's available right now.
