I haven't seen the game, but you may want to have a look at Lucky's pixel perfect collision detection, it is very fast, but I didn't quite understand what you said about pixel by pixel ops. Have a look for it here: http://members.home.net/theluckyleper/ Other solutions include a combination of rectangles, so you might say that a ship comprises of 10 rectangles and test those rectangles for collisions, but it still isn't totally accurate. So you could then add some circle collisions (distance checking) so the ships are made of assorted geometric shapes. hth
