I have an incredibly powerful sprite engine in the works, and would be happy to provide any sort of assistance/QA you might need, although I don't really have any manageable source yet.
I just want to say the 2D/3D combo is VERY powerful, and you can easily get 60+ fps with over 100 scaled, translucent, rotated, animated, and lit sprites on the screen at once with a Permedia2 (old!) card. If you use a lot of classes (as you should) to make your code scalable, you'll get about 50%+ FPS increase after you compile.
