Just thought add to this, and say that there are a lot of graphics cards out there which do not support "WIDE SURFACES" in video memory. Basically what this means is that if you create an off screen surface in vid mem which is wider than the primary surface, and the DDCAPS2_WIDESURFACES is not specified in the device caps, then it will fail. Always better to have a larger height than width, or store them in sys mem. If you're anim strips are no bigger than your resolution than there is no problem.
