These Damn Linux haXorz posting again :P j/k .. I'm not sure here but I think someone said a while ago that openGL was slower to use from vb and more difficult than using d3d IM. IMHO carmack prefers opengl because when he tried coding with dx he used it at version 5 or something.. possibly lower. When it was just not on par with performance and ease to code (he said himself that opengl was MUCH eaiser to code). However now I think d3d is pretty much on par with opengl.. as far as game development goes. It has evolved a whole lot. The next version will put it right up there with anything else. The biggest reason that most developers these days use d3d is because it is more compatible with the general population. Pretty much every new home system today will run a basic d3d game.. not many people know about configuring for opengl and many card manufacturers not optimise their ogl drivers as much as they should. If it wasn't for carmack and quake I don't think that opengl would be where it is in the game community today.
