Gamma ramps are merely a way of altering the amount of red/green/blue in every pixel in the hardware stream. You can't create grey with this method. Using a 256 colour palette is just as easy; potentially faster and if done correctly can look almost as nice. Give me a shout if you want some source code; I wrote a tutorial on Palettes, palette animation and gamma controls a few weeks back - for my new site. Assuming only a few peeps want it I can email it to you..
