Texture problem.. (i think) Soop (1 reply, 0 views) (2000-Jun-12) Woa.. lots has happened in the few days I've been away.
Anyway, I'm working on a small Retained Mode (gasp.. nooo arghh) game.
So far everything is going fine, the level editor is coming along nicely and I can now construct scenes in my editor and export them directly to my game.
Even with many faces in a scene the framerate still stays around the 60 fps mark on a p2 350/TNT.
However, the only problem is that when the camera first passes over some objects the game experiences some slowdown, as if it needs to access the texture for the next piece of geometry thats coming up.
I know this isn't a problem with the general speed of the game because the framerate jumps back up again after the object has been "seen" by the camera. Once all the objects have been put into the cameras view it runs fine.
I assume this slowdown is because RM is buffering some geometry/texture details or something on the fly.
Is there anyway I can perform this buffering at the beggining of the program rather than at run time.
