I think you're missing the point... Lynx of CP (0 replies, 0 views) (2000-Jun-10) Square knows what it's doing. If they wished for it, I'm VERY sure they could have put the high quality graphics in the main game, After all, why would Psudo-3D take more processing power than full 3D? It's just compositing a 3D object in a 2D world...
You must remember that over 85-95% of the staff of Squaresoft are JAPANESE, if any of you watch Anime, you'll know that the Japanese have an interesting style of portraying things. Final Fantasy 8 was made to appeal to the "Western" world (I live in the Eastern side of the world).
For the posts above, what I try to remember is that there is NO Final Fantasy series. No FF game was directly linked to each other, so, it was a set of games with similar underlying principals, endowed with the name "Final Fantasy" and in that respect, I treat EVERY FF game with individuality. I loved the style of graphics in FF7, the story of it really sucked me in and I loved playing it with my friends, trying to figure out what I was doing. FF8, I don't think has the lame plot many seem to think. It was a little hard to grasp in the start, but I enjoy watching the characters unfold, which is what I play FOR!
Okay, now for my opinion on 2D vs 3D. It's all about Context. Wonderboy III is in all respects a 2D game, because that's what the original was. What I believe is that, 3D gives a feeling of Immersion. you can get "into" a game more than a 2D game. The problem with 3D is that everybody feels pressured to make a 3D game cause "3D is IN". 3D is NOT IN. that's what people don't realise, is the fact that by forcing games that would be perfectly fine and fun in 2D, you can kill your game. The game that comes to my mind is Lemmings. That game was incredible, some people hated it, but I loved the challenge it provided. When it came to 3D I gave it a chance and was purely disgussed by it.
So there is my 0.5 cents (Now look what you've done, you've put me in debt :P). And the point to my rant? Developers: Think hard about your game. Does it NEED 3D? Don't just blindly say "YES!" Cause it may not.
